Hi, Welcome to My First Blog!!

Hi, my name is Susan Valle and I have been teaching chemistry for 30 years.
The PBL for this semester will incorporate the book The Martian by Andy Weir.
this is the first time I am using literature in the chemistry class. Suggestions and feedback are greatly appreciated.

  1. Hi Susan. Tell us a little bit more about the book, The Martian, and what your goals are for using it in your chemistry class. I love this idea and would love to understand your objectives a bit better, as well as hear how it goes!

  2. Hi Susan! I see we picked the same template! It is so reflective of my style, I can tell you are a reader too! I have The Martian sitting on my bedside table, waiting for summer! What a great idea to connect chemistry to the book! I would have liked chemistry a lot more if it had involved literature! I am anxious to hear how it goes!

  3. Wow! What a great idea Susan! We talked about "The Martian" this year because because we read a Time For Kids news magazine article that related to life on Mars. I know my fourth-graders loved it and were really into talking about Mars. Some of them had read the book and many of them had seen the movie. Maybe a project that would incorporate science/chemistry in order to find life on Mars or something that would help humans live on Mars??? I wish I had more to offer, but I really look forward to seeing what you come up with.

  4. What a great idea! I love PBLs, and I know my students do to! I don't know much about the book, but what are some of your ideas so far?

  5. Hello Susan,
I think that it is a wonderful idea to use a book in your science class. I know that I loved the movie so I can just imagine how good the book is. This is a great time to talk about Mars because we are planning on sending an unmanned ship soon. This could bring up great discussions in you class.
